Overview:
The project involved the ciivl works associated with the construction of a new 330/66kV transformer no.2 switch bay and installation of new equipement for an existing 330/132kV transformer no.1 in a live substation environment.  The location was the Macarthur substation at Menangle Park within the Cambelltown City Council LGA.
Scope:
  • The civil works associated with the construction of new equipment footings and conduit installation including, but not limited to the following:
  • Construction of 2 concrete bunds for the new transformer including oil spill pits and pipes
  • Foundations and footings for HV equipment
  • Cable trenching
  • Earthing tails trenching and backfill, to connect with existing earth grid for new equipment
  • Construction of new oil drain pits and pipe installation from new transformer compound to existing spill oil system
  • Demolition and relocation of services after commissioning of the new transformer
Core Outcomes:
  • The project overcame the significant challenges involved in working in a live substation environment
  • Careful planning and coordination to overcome restricted access by the site team to ensure the works were completed in a safe manner in accordance with the program
  • Eliminated the deed for additional outages by using carefully thought out construction methodologies and plant selection to maintain Safe Approach Distance to HV at all times
  • Achieved the handover to the client in July 2022 despite significant inclement weather challenges
