Project Commencement:
January 2021

Project Completion:
July 2022

Client:
Thales Australia

Overview:
ABI Civil Contracting was engaged by Thales to upgrade the fenders on the Garden Island Graving Dock. The new integrated fendering system located along the Graving Dock wall provides minimal risk of damage to vessels when entering and exiting the dock. The Heritage dock is the largest in the southern hemisphere built during WW II.  The project was undertaken whilst the dock remained operational, providing a unique set of challenges around security and site access.

Scope:

  • Removal of 28 existing fenders and dismantling for recycling
  • Production of shop drawings and design coordination
  • Assembly and fabrication of 36 off 12T Trelleborg MV300P fenders
  • Carry out alterations to the existing dock concrete structure
  • Install 1300 x 800mm mounting Anchors along the dock wall
  • Rigorous quality control to meet the design life in a marine environment
  • Installation of 36 New 12T fenders equally placed along the dock
  • Relocate exisiting services
  • Maintain an operational dock for the duration of the project

Core Outcomes:

  • ABI Civil’s project team was quick to establish a working methodology and program that allowed the client to maintain use of the dock at short notice
  • The detailed methodology outlaid the fundamentals on how the project was to be delivered to the tight timeframe, while protecting the Heritage site
  • The high level of performance on site meant that KPI’s on Quality, Safety and Environmental were achieved
